Mickey Cohen has spent years building engines, testing performance Harley Davidson parts and completing Harley dyno tune sessions for motorcycles with different engine combinations. That experience allowed him to tell Bob Wood how he wanted each motorcycle to perform—even if Mickey was not personally designing the camshaft specifications.
As Mickey explained:
“I don’t build cams. I can’t tell you how to build a cam. That’s why there are guys like Bob.”
Bob Wood supplied the camshaft engineering expertise, while Mickey supplied the desired power characteristics based on his experience building and tuning Harley-Davidson motorcycles. The result is a collection of Wood Performance Cams focused heavily on torque, throttle response and real-world rideability.
“All the cams I built were for more torque,” Mickey said.
Wood Performance Mickey Cohen Signature Cam - MC8-23XE: A Milwaukee-Eight Cam for Touring and Two-Up Riding
The Wood Performance Mickey Cohen Signature Cam - MC8-23XE is based on the Wood Performance 22XE, but its power delivery was refined to match Mickey's preferences.
According to Mickey, the MC8-23XE gives up a small amount of peak torque in exchange for a broad and highly usable powerband:
“The peak torque number came down about four or five points, but the peak torque coming off the bottom from zero to 5,000 or 5,500 RPM is phenomenal. It comes right up and it takes off.”
This Harley camshaft is especially well suited for riders who want immediate acceleration without constantly downshifting. Mickey recommends it for two-up riders, touring riders, weekend riders and Harley owners who travel to events such as Sturgis or Daytona.
“It is a great cam for two-up guys, guys who like to tour, guys who don’t want to shift all the time and guys who just want to pull the throttle on the freeway without downshifting,” Mickey explained.
During one Harley dyno tune session, Mickey installed the MC8-23XE in a Gen 2 117 Milwaukee-Eight. The combination produced approximately 128 horsepower and 128 torque. More importantly, Mickey emphasized how quickly the motorcycle accelerated from low in the RPM range.
For Gen 1 Milwaukee-Eight engines, the MC8-23XE also delivers an aggressive exhaust note. Mickey describes its sound as a blend between the Wood 22X and 475 cams, combining the rumble of the 475 with a sharper, crisper character.
The MC8-23XE may be a good choice for:
- Gen 1 or Gen 2 Milwaukee-Eight engines
- 114ci and 117ci engine combinations
- Touring and two-up motorcycles
- Riders who prefer strong low- and midrange torque
- Riders who want freeway passing power without frequent downshifts
This cam is not intended primarily for riders who keep their engines above 5,500 RPM. It is a driver-focused Harley camshaft built to make a street motorcycle responsive and enjoyable through the RPM range most riders actually use.
Wood Performance Mickey Cohen Signature Cam - MC8-78X: A Cam for Larger Milwaukee-Eight Engine Builds
The Wood Performance Mickey Cohen Signature Cam - MC8-78X targets more serious Milwaukee-Eight engine combinations, including 128ci, 131ci and 135ci builds (135 too be tested!). Unlike the MC8-23XE, this camshaft is intended for built engines with upgraded cylinder heads and valve springs.
“This is like Gen 1 131s, 135s and 128s,” Mickey said. “They’ve got heads with valve springs. This cam relies on valve springs.”
Mickey Cohen Motorsports plans to continue testing the MC8-78X in large-displacement Gen 1 and Gen 2 Milwaukee-Eight builds. This cam should be viewed as an option for riders assembling a complete performance engine—not as a simple bolt-in cam for an otherwise stock motorcycle.
Because the MC8-78X depends on supporting engine modifications, professional installation and a custom Harley dyno tune are especially important. The cylinder heads, valve springs, compression, exhaust system and fuel delivery must work together for the combination to perform correctly.
Wood Performance Mickey Cohen Signature Cam - MC-223-1 and Wood Performance Mickey Cohen Signature Cam - MC-223-6: Torque-Focused Twin Cam Options
The MC-223-1 and MC-223-6 bring the Signature Series philosophy to Harley-Davidson Twin Cam motorcycles. The two versions accommodate different Twin Cam cam bearing and model-year applications, so riders should confirm exact engine and year compatibility before ordering.
Mickey described the design as “a build off of the 222-1 with more lump and more torque.”
These Wood Performance Mickey Cohen Signature Cams can work particularly well in 88ci, 96ci and 103ci Twin Cam engines. Mickey considers this cam family one of his preferred choices for heavier Harley-Davidson baggers because it provides the low-RPM grunt needed to get a touring motorcycle moving.
“That’s my go-to on the baggers—100% on the baggers,” Mickey said.
The MC-223 camshaft family may be a strong option for:
- Harley-Davidson Twin Cam baggers
- 88ci, 96ci and 103ci engines
- Select Dyna and Softail applications
- Riders who prioritize torque over maximum RPM
- Touring motorcycles carrying passengers or luggage
A heavier bagger needs a different power curve than a lighter Softail or Dyna. The MC-223-1 and MC-223-6 are designed to produce practical torque where street and touring riders can use it.
Wood Performance Mickey Cohen Signature Cam - MC-556: A Strong Match for Stock 110 Twin Cam Engines
The Wood Performance Mickey Cohen Signature Cam - MC-556 is the larger Twin Cam option in the Mickey Cohen Signature Series. Mickey specifically recommends it for stock 110ci Twin Cam engines.
“You guys with 110s—that’s a 556,” he said. “Stock 110s, not built 110s. A 556—it’s a home run.”
Mickey Cohen Motorsports has also used the cam in 103ci Softails and Dynas with strong results. Because those motorcycles are lighter than a fully loaded bagger, they can take better advantage of the MC-556’s power delivery.
Mickey noted that the MC-556 may feel slightly softer below 3,000 RPM in a heavy bagger when compared with the MC-223 cam family. However, a properly completed Harley dyno tune can significantly improve how the combination responds.
The MC-556 may be best suited for:
- Stock 110ci Twin Cam engines
- Performance-oriented 103ci Softails and Dynas
- Lighter motorcycles that can use a more aggressive power curve
- Riders willing to trade some very-low-RPM response for stronger performance higher in the range
Why a Custom Harley Dyno Tune Matters
Installing a Harley camshaft is only one part of building a complete performance package. The intake, exhaust, displacement, compression and motorcycle weight can all change how a cam performs.
Even the same camshaft can behave differently in a heavy bagger and a lighter Softail. Short exhaust systems can also create torque dips that need to be considered when selecting parts and tuning the motorcycle.
